Our two aftercare groups, “Löwenbande” and “Stärken-stärken-Gruppe,” met again on June 19 and 20.
The goal of the groups is to provide an age-appropriate space for children and adolescents (who have previously) had cancer to share their experiences with one another and develop strategies for coping with the challenges of everyday life after treatment.
The meeting of our “Stärken-stärken-Gruppe,” in particular, demonstrates once again that while a cancer diagnosis in childhood or adolescence represents a massive turning point in the lives of everyone affected, the disease is not insurmountable.
These young adults have been part of the group for many years. Since graduating from school, they’ve all gone their separate ways—studying, traveling, completing vocational training, and simply enjoying their lives. As a result, it’s become quite difficult to find dates that work for everyone.
But the desire of all group members to keep the group going is even stronger. After a year, we’ve finally managed to make it happen again.
It was a very positive reunion for everyone—one that inspires courage and shows just how much strength and resilience these young fighters possess, and that while the disease is a challenge, it is not an obstacle to growing into wonderful people. They all carry hope forward and lead the way as great role models!
