Chicken wings, curly fries, and potato wedges—that was on the menu for our young patients on the ward on August 13, 2026.
The topic of “food” often takes on special significance in the daily lives of oncology patients. It’s not uncommon for the sense of taste to change temporarily as a result of treatment. Food often no longer tastes the way they’re used to—sometimes much too bland, sometimes too intense, and sometimes just completely different. Nausea or even sudden, changing food cravings can make eating during treatment even more difficult and lead to patients sometimes consuming very little food.
Naturally, this makes it all the more joyful for us and the parents when the kids eat something with an appetite during such times and replenish the energy they need for the rest of their treatment.
So, in a cozy setting, we prepared chicken wings and potato wedges ourselves. Of course, we couldn’t leave out a homemade sour cream dip. Everyone was eager to see the result, and the aroma alone revealed that the boys had done a great job. Eating together as a group also helped ensure that even a few “picky eaters” managed to finish a good portion today.
Our new FSJ volunteer, Marvin, was there to help. He’s been a valuable addition to our team for the past two weeks and will be assisting with our daily work for the next year. A warm welcome to our team, Marvin!
